Researchers within AREN are based at AgResearch, Lincoln, Massey and Waikato Universities. The disciplines represented within AREN include agricultural systems, economics, finance, marketing, strategic and systems management.

 

Alan McDermott

MApplSc(Hons), Agribusiness Researcher, AgResearch Ruakura

Alan has been working for AgResearch since early 2001. Prior to this, Alan spent 2½ years working in China on pastoral and rural development projects. His recent research has focused on improving the performance of agribusiness value chains; the interactions between producers, processors and retailers in the meat, wool and dairy sectors; the factors facilitating, as well as hindering, the adoption of radical innovations; and the management and modelling of complex systems.

Alan McDermott

Caroline Saunders

PhD, Professor, Lincoln University

Caroline is Director of the Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit at Lincoln University. She has more than 20 years research expertise in the UK and New Zealand and has over 100 publications specialising on the economic impact of policy. Caroline's current research specialises in economic development of New Zealand, especially for the regions. This includes assessing optimum use of resources to improve the well-being of New Zealanders, international trade, market access and development of new technologies. In addition, she is developing novel ways of assessing the impact of development, including the social and environmental impacts. Caroline undertakes research for a wide range of private and public bodies both here and overseas.  She is on the National Science Panel and is also on the Royal Society Council and chairs their Social Sciences committee.

Frank Scrimgeour

PhD, Professor, Waikato University

Frank is on the staff of the Economics Department at Waikato Management School. Frank has a long history of research in agribusiness and agricultural economics. He is particularly interested in the dairy and kiwifruit sectors and has on-going work relating to: agricultural and horticultural land values, agribusiness capital structures, agribusiness success over time, international agribusiness strategy, international agribusiness market analysis and agribusiness and politics.

Frank Scrimgeour

Nicola Shadbolt

MAgrSc(Hons), Senior Lecturer, Massey University

Nicola is Senior Lecturer in Farm & Agribusiness Management. Before joining Massey, she spent 15 years gaining a wide range of experience in government, agribusiness and consultancy. Outside academia, Nicola has held various directorships and is actively involved in four equity partnerships producing milk, beef, sheepmeat, wool, venison, velvet and timber. Nicola's primary research interests are in the areas of strategic management, business and risk analysis, and farm investment.

Gavin Sheath

PhD, Business Development Manager, AgResearch Ruakura

Gavin has been working at AgResearch since its formation. He has over 30 years experience in agricultural systems research and development and taking science out to agribusiness in New Zealand and overseas. He established an agricultural systems capability in AgResearch that embodied farm systems, quantitative modelling and social science expertise. Gavin has identified new value chain opportunities and managed the integration of enabling technologies and practices; and he has contributed to industry sector strategies and reviews in terms of research and development.
